part 3 - RURAL/FIELD classroom - JULY 7, 2018

location: dsbees apiary N7928 cty road WH, Fond du Lac

check-in: 10:00

class: 10:30 - 11:30

field: 11:30....(open)

 

FEES: $70/each or $50*/additional person

 

REGISTRATION DUE BY: JANUARY 31

 

CLASS IS LIMITED TO 20 PEOPLE!  If we have more than that - another class / time will be formed

 

This class WILL QUALIFY as the educational component for the

Fond du Lac permit..

INCLUDES - All three classes....

  • 7 + hours of "classroom" education and 3++ hours "hands-on"
  • REFERENCE MATERIAL: handouts, catalogs, resources

  • Beekeeping for Dummies book will be available for purchase here - or the day of class

 

PART ONE: SOFTWARE - classroom MORNING

  • All about BEES: biology, lifecycle, queens, breeds
  • THE HIVE as in THE BEES - functions of the hive
  • Products of the hive - honey, wax, propolis, etc
  • ORDERING BEES - packages, nucs, etc - making choices

 

PART TWO: HARDWARE - classroom AFTERNOON

  • Beekeeping equipment, tools, material
  • THE HIVE as in THE BOX - frames - making choices
  • Putting the bees into the boxes (installation)
  • Starting - the growth of the hive
  • Expectations, problems
  • An entire LANGSTROTH system will be on hand and demonstrated

 

PART THREE (July 7) - FIELD DAY

  • Your "experiences" so far (even if you didn't start)
  • Expectations/assessment - the development/health of the hive
  • Addressing issues
  • Looking to year #2
  • Getting ready for winter
  • The WISCONSIN STATE BEE INSPECTOR WILL BE ON SITE!  He will be doing HIVE INSPECTIONS (mite counts) and taking samples for research.

Apiary...

  • YOUR OWN PROTECTIVE GEAR IS REQUIRED, bring your smoker and hive tool.  Bring your camera, notebooks...
